Need some assistance connecting with a BBA

Post by shanzenos »

I just got a BBA from Japan. Now, I'm completely unfamiliar with what I'd need. I heard somewhere since my BBA was from japan I needed planetweb browser 3, and also have a disc of that now. What do I need, step by step. To play phantasy star online v.2? I know Nothing of connecting a DC online or even the PSO servers. Please help?

Because PSO was given BBA support as an afterthought, you must first configure modem settings for your Dreamcast, even though you won't be using them. Use one of the many PlanetWeb browsers if you have one, or download XDP and burn it to a CD-R. Just invent a fake username, password, and a number to dial. Once you've done that, you can connect the BBA. The easiest way to configure it is by selecting "WEBSITE" on the title screen of PSOv2, assuming you have the NSTC-U release. If you have JPv2 or EUv2, that won't work, and you'll need XDP or PlanetWeb 3.0 to configure the BBA.

What kinds of complications would you be looking for?

As long as you're trying to connect to Sylverant, there's a boot disc that can be used to patch a few things in the legit GD-ROM version of the game the game to connect you. Nothing particularly complicated involved. Any time you want to play, boot your Dreamcast with the boot disc, swap it out for your GD-ROM when asked, and press start to boot it (when asked). I tried to make sure that everything was as quick and painless as possible.

If you want to connect to other servers (like schtserv), you'll need some codebreaker codes if you want to use JPv2 or USv2 to play (as far as I know, schtserv doesn't support JPv1, but if it did, you'd need codebreaker codes for it as well).

I have a burned copy of PSO v2. For starters. I obtained the boot disc for your server- but the dreamcast won't load it. I have the CDI version, and it just stops after the dreamcast start-up for games, and stays there. I waited once, and it'll just eventually reset and go to the menu. And do I really need the actual US GD-ROM for this? I can get it if needed.

The loader won't boot CD-R games, but CD-R copies of PSO shouldn't need the loader, anyway. The most recent releases automatically connect to this server on their own and require no boot discs. The reason most people don't use them is that CD-R copies of PSOv2 tend to freeze when people join your team when you're not on Pioneer 2, which requires you to put a password on all of your teams and to avoid playing the offline quests and Challenge mode. A GD-ROM copy is more stable, but it's also harder on the Dreamcast's optical drive and less convenient to boot.

Ah, thanks. There any chance you could share a link to or upload a CDI of V2 that would auto-connect and also work on a US dreamcast? Or does region not even matter with the dreamcast?

Most competently created CDI files are patched to be region free. If you want an auto-connect USv1 or USv2, you can download one or more of the images from this:

There may still be a topic here or links on DC ISO Zone to EUv2 discs that will automatically connect to Sylverant; just be sure that you don't get one of the discs that connects to a different server by mistake.
