Disc won't read? Renew your DC Lens!

Post by TacT »

Dreamcast won't read discs? Try this!

Everyone knows that eventually your Dreamcast will have problems reading discs, its a sad inevitability. Weather or not CD-Rs wear it out faster than GDs is another endless discussion. It makes sense but there are too many factors to consider unless anyone has any real proof That's not what this topic is about.

Sure we've all had a problem here and there with some discs and have to clean the laser lens once in a while. Some DIY guides online say to use a cotton swab and some isopropyl or ethenol alcohol to clean a laser lens, I Don't recommend this! but I'm not a scientific expert but I do know that isopropyl alcohol can damage certain types of plastic!
I personally do not recommend ever touching the lens but it has to be done SO BE GENTLE.

I recently had a dreamcast have a problem loading even my perfect condition GD Roms. I figured it was just loosing integrity like they eventually do. Then I started to think more about the lens itself, I took a closer look and the lens here seems to have a pale reflective tint to it. Don't have a good enough camera around to take a great picture but ill try to sometime. Like I said before I'm no scientist lol I don't know what type of plastic they're made of or what type of dichroic properties they have.

I thought, Don't plastics eventually oxidize and fade over time?

So I have this AMAZING Product around, Mequiars PlastX! ~
~This is an auto product used mainly for defogging headlights, but it states can be used for many other things, It can be used for scratched CD's and can renew old Sunglasses too! It has UV inhibitors in it and I can tell a difference right away I wipe some on buff it off and go outside in this arizona sun and I can't even feel the intensity my eyes are relaxed. It only lasts a handful of months it eventually wipes off. Works great for headlights and every piece of plastic I've used it on! It also works to fix oxidation in certain plastics as well. I use it all the time!

I figured since the DC lens was already dying What could it hurt to try this out? Works great for everything else. I wiped just the tiniest dab on a cotton swab, Gently applied it on the lens and buffed it dry with the other end. I could see a very slight difference in the sheen of the lens. Could just be my imagination.

I fired up my DC and it reads just about Every disc I've put in there! Even some old ones really scratched up wouldn't ever load WILL NOW LOAD!

This may just be another temporary fix, it may not be good for it at all I don't know, But it worked well so far I haven't had problems. I recommend you try it!

Cool. Luckily none of my DC console lasers are breaking down, but I'll keep this in mind for the future.

I've confirmed this works pretty well!
I had an old dreamcast around for parts that wouldn't read discs And an extra Lens from a pc CD Drive from a long time ago that broke and I took it apart and had the same exact parts the dreamcast had, so i had the parts around, I had tried a long time ago to switch it for the one in the dreamcast but it didnt work back then still kept parts around.

I just tried this stuff on both the dreamcasts lens and the cd lens and they work fine now! both work in this old dreamcast.

i should have tried to take before and after pictures if i had a good camera, one of these lenses had a really blue faded tint to it after i used this is really clear now

Mequiars - I love there products I use them on my truck all the time I never used there PlasticX before though since my truck is in good condition but does this stuff buff out the scratches on like acrylic plastic? I am asking because I have a part that has a plastic cover I cannot replace and it looks like shit because its so scratched up. I will keep this in mind if i have issues with my DC once it gets here though great find!

its not abrasive so it does not buff out scratches, it just fills them in temporarily and makes a new thin layer on top, it also conditions the plastic and helps against oxidation.

I use it on old sunglasses too it has uv inhibitors in it and i can feel a difference when i step outside in this arizona sun, it lasts a couple months and i just wipe some fresh on

However It doesn't work Very well for fixing scratches on discs helps a little but that type of plastic better off buffing them the right way with a disc fixer.

I just got four broken systems I used this stuff and pot adjusted the laser counter-clockwise to reduce it and 3/4 are now working fine. I have a July 1999 system I can't fix I think the laser is gone on it can I just buy a new laser and swap it out? I wouldn't mind having a working launch system....

Wow thats cool that you fixed a few of them using this stuff its great! =)

Yes you can sometimes find the laser replacement part, the part number is "SPU3200" theres plenty of them on ebay right now mostly from china I think they're new but who knows. I think the dreamcast's is a 16Pin some are 17 pin but might also work.
