After typing all those commands and getting to the part:
hit setup -> Detect

I can't seem to detect my modem.
I did everything in the guide/video till this point.

Then I started to think,
do I really have some sorth of modem and do I really need a USB modem like this one:
Image

My laptop already has a RJ11/RJ45 port.
Isn't that enought?

I had in mind that I had to connect the cable to my Laptop RJ11 port and the other to the Dreamcast's modem port.

Can some1 help me out?

AFAIK, just because you have a modem doesn't mean you can do this. Some modems are designed to only dial out; you can't dial into them. If your laptop modem is of that type, then you do need to buy a USB modem.

You don't need a USB modem to do this. This guide covers 4 different types of modems (USB, Serial, Integrated, PCI). If you want to use the RJ11 port on your laptop, that is an integrated modem, so when following through the guide treat it as such. Make sure you read everything through thoroughly. You need to first determine which COM port your modem runs on, then add a physical serial port to your VMware OS and set it to that port. You should go back and verify that you didn't skip anything. If the modem still isn't detected you might want to try updating the modem driver in windows. You might also want to try running gnome-ppp as root (sudo gnome-ppp) instead. I didn't need to, but it could require root privileges to access your modem on the OS you're using.

One other note, make sure you check to see if your Dreamcast modem is a model "A" or "B". Not all modems have power on the RJ11 phone line.

For those who do may not know, If you are using a Dreamcast model "A" modem, you're good, but the model "B" modem requires voltage on the phone line.

You can use Windows 98 as well, in VMware, if your modem ain't Linux compatible (drivers). I have a Conceptronic modem with conexant chipset. It ain't working with this setup, so I went on youtube and found this user called "thenesmaster". He has a tutorial that works great. He's using Windows 98, though he says to avoid the second edition it works too. I'm using that one in VMware myself.
Connection! Hooray!!!

Can Someone possible help me? I am stuck at the last step with planet web. I am following the VMWARE guide using crunch bang.
First off I have my modem on COM port 3 by following the settings,

Modem uses tty1 to my knowledge...anyways following the guide upon connect. I get the mgetty no process error. I do further reading and notice i have to type sudo /sbin/mgetty -s 115200 -D /dev/ttyS0 or something similar with '"AT' to start mgetty. That is not in the tutorial so..thats where im stuck. I ran the AT command in the terminal and nothing appears. just spaces down below. the tail commands to start logging say no directory is available. but when i hit connect on PW and wait 3 seconds to KILL. i hear a long dialup tone on my computer but nothing happens...Can someone please help ive made it this far!.... btw, i have a ROSEWILL RNX-56USB with connexant and a revision A modem. no line inducer..
