Will A Japanese Game work with an American VMU & Controller?

Hello everyone, this is my first thread. (Whoopee.) I don't know a lot about this kind of topic within Dreamcasts, so please bear with me. But anyways, I had a question that I needed help answering. I am looking to buy an imported Sonic Adventure 2 game (Japanese) to use with Utopia on my (American) DC. I know (since I have Utopia) that the game CAN work with my American DC in general, but I wanted to know will it be compatible with an American VMU and controller via Utopia? Especially the Chao Garden data that's on the game. Thank you for your time reading, and in advance for a response.
