Quake 3 does require a Dial tone, it does not support blind dial. So if you have a telephone line with a dial tone you can use the swap method with that. I didnt have a phone line here anymore. When i was using my imac to connect I played a dial tone .wav file through a stereo or amplifier with the phone cord wired to the speaker output and used that to swap.
Or you can get a telephone line simulator like i have now.

Had a great time, sick of my pad not letting me talk after about 5 mins.
Was looking through some old bags of gaming stuff earlier and found my DC mouse that a swore i sold on ebay, so im stoked about that, now ive got a feeling ive got a DC keyboard buried somewhere in the garage, ill have a look later on.

Any chance this could be moved to Saturday night? I simply get way tired after work and just end up crashing. Saturday night would be better for me. If not I will just have to try again and work around the time difference better.
