Would I be-able to use a netopia r5300

Post by Rhys17 »

If I got a netopia r5300 would it work, cause it has the same exact plugs on the back and looks exactly the same as the r2000 models; just want to know before I purchase one.

Unfortunately no. It doesn't have a built-in analog modem like the R2020 and the R2121. You can add a serial modem but that's even harder to find than the other routers. I've been looking into this lately and it seems those two are the only models with built-in analog modems.

Oh man that sucks cause I haven't been able to find a netopia modem of those models yet, I just keep finding other models. Well if there is a will there is a way :)

In addition to the two pcwzrd mentioned there is also the Netopia R2000 which included only one modem. Aside from those though I don't think there were any other netopia models that included dial up modems.

Ah yes, I forgot about the R2000.

I managed to find a site that's selling R2020s for $57.50 + shipping but they have a lot of bad reviews. If you're interested in taking a chance, you can find it here:

http://www.pinnaclemicro.com/computer/d ... oCCHnw_wcB

Edit: Just noticed you're from New Zealand. Shipping to there would be $120 so it's probably not worth it.

Another edit:

After some research I was able to find a few others that have integrated modems: The Netopia R3120, R6120, R7220, and the 3366. Of course there's no guarantee they'll work for this purpose just because they have built-in modems. Maybe brourke could look into it. There are a couple of the 3366s on eBay at the moment. There are also a couple R7220s on eBay.

Hey I never though of that. Can't you just use some of those other models of netopia with a serial 56k modem connected? old serial dialup modems are not hard to find and cheap , i just don't know what would work with a netopia now i want to try it

You can't just use any old serial modem as far as I can tell. You need the one specifically made for the router. It was an optional add-on when it was being sold. The R3100 for example needs a "TER/AD1 Analog Dial-In Kit".

I think the R7220 will be your best bet but none of these models have been tested to work for this so it's a risk.
