I wonder what version this might be?
Info:
"Early US Prototype version of Shenmue on 3 GD Roms dated 6/21/2000. My husband was the lead tester on the game at Sega of America and was given these as a souvenir for his duty on a grueling, yet amazing project (as he describes it). This particular version of the game has two debug menus that allowed testers to trigger events at different locations for test purposes. This set does not include a Passport disc, which would have been disc 4. My husband actually does not believe the passport disc was ready for testing at this time, hence only the gameplay discs are included in this set. The game is on 3 official SEGA GD ROMs which was what Sega of America used for testing and evaluation prior to release. The pictures of the game are of this actual GD ROM being played as well as the debug menu in action. Given the nature of this being a very early US edition of the game, crashing, bugs, incomplete voiceover, incomplete levels and more are likely present in these discs.
Here are a couple of notes on the discs:
•These discs were in circulation in the test department and show signs of use by multiple testers. They are in fair shape, but not perfect with some light scratches/scuffs from being handled.
•The in-game debug menu for triggering events at location can be accessed with a second controller in the fourth or D port of the Dreamcast. The user needs to press start to access the menu and use triggers to cycle through what they want to do. My husband is going off of memory, so this is the best he can recall functionality of the event menu. It was used to trigger every possible event at a location given that the game was time-based and unique each time you visited a location based on the in-game clock.
•The Start menu debug screen can be accessed by pressing start immediately when the start screen appears. For testing, the developer AM2 provided set coordinates and times for the testers to check out. This list of coordinates is not known to exist, but there is an online video showing someone accessing a portion of the game via this menu with a similar version of the game. It may take some serious tinkering to figure out how it could work without an official list. That said, if you let the game sit on the start screen and flash once into the same start menu the second time, the game will start from the beginning.
•The screens shown are from this version of the game in action. Notice the COKE machine in one of the screen shots, which was not the soda machine that appeared in the final US version of the game.
•An official Dreamcast System disc was used by Sega to run these prototypes on NTSC Dreamcasts"
