Yeah, it's hard getting the thing to go over the speed pads (plus I don't have the manual with me)

Tell me about it! Ironically I thought this game was fairly slow when I first played it because I didn't know there were speed boosts. It also gets a lot faster in the later classes. You can read the manual here if you so desire.
