Well it was moreover that they were selling something with their trademarks and copyrights all over it, and they had to send them the C&D to protect their trademarks/copyrights. This is why a few years back Bethesda sent Mojang a C&D over that game "Scrolls". They knew there would be backlash but if you don't protect your trademarks/copyrights you essentially lose them

But point being nobody is selling the servers or using trademarks
Though lets be honest here this is Sega were talking about! They are the only video game company i can think of that will let fans work on their blockbuster games (aka Sonic mania), Give the keys for game makers to take their ips to kickstarter (Shenmue) and publicly praise their fans for keeping their consoles alive.
It would blow my mind is sega were to release an official game. Or at least support a current project. I think that would shake things up a ton. It would put sega in the news to say the least.
