The seller doesn't seem to know much about this device but I think it should work I just wanted to see if anyone else had opinions on the item.

I got the Netopia 2020 for $20

I just need the line simulator as a few friends on mine want to play something other then Quake 3 and PSO with me so if anyone could lend a little insight if that one would work or a cheaper alternative. As I can't justify paying more then a BBA to get a 56k modem online. I already bought a BBA to play online and have a type "A" modem for the old VM setup but once my HDD crashed I have no intention of every trying that again.

That phone line simulator should work. I think its just the first generation of TLS simulators. Also here is a TLS-2 for $45 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Teltone-TLS2-Te ... 3a7262bb5a

The teltone tls, tls-2, and tls-3 are all pretty much the same. You dial 40 for "station 40" and 29 for "station 29". http://www.teltone.com/support/faq.htm#tls

Thanks for that link now I have another to bid on and that one is the v2 of the device and cheaper while the one i was looking at is the v1 and cost more. The netopia modem arrived today so I'm only missing one piece the line simulator. If I win the auction as it is now I will have spent under 100 dollars about $80 which isn't bad as the ones I was looking at would have ran me more than a broadband adapter and since I have 1 of those I wasn't looking to spend 150 or more dollars. But thank you very much for finding this message out as I did not feel like setting up a virtual pc again.

Just got all my needed supplies in and I will be doing this with a Netopia 2020 and TLS2, if successful i will post results. All in all I spent $85 for my setup I hope it works as those TLS3's are stupidly expensive and from what I can tell the TLS and TLS2 should be able to do the same thing for less then half the cost.

Got all my hardware but silly me forgot to get telephone wires as I haven't had one in years. Well since the DC was still online. I will report back with results of using a TLS2. I paid a little over $85 for this setup only because I didn't notice the modem I bought had no PSU but for $20 what did I expect? The PSU ran me $15 and $50 for the TLS2.

Does anyone know if a Netopia R2121 would work?

I just looked it up and looking through the manual i would say yes the r2121 should work. It seems to be very similar to the r2020. Its got 2 56k modems which can be used for dial-in access. ill attach it to this.

Cool. So can you tell what the difference is or is it just a newer model?

I think its just the r2020 with some extra features. On page 47 of that manual it talks about a java based web management for it which i know the r2020 doesnt have. I dont think you can access "advanced" functions of the router through that though you still have to use telnet.
