Blind Light guns?

I have a really annoying problem that i cant seem to get an a answer for.

So i got my old fat vga monitor back from my parents house, and i tought it would work with my Light guns.
One of the gun kind of works, but only if i hold it close to the monitor. And the other one dosent do anything.
although the guns work they wont see the monitor correctly. They may not be compatible with each other?

i dont have an old Tv to test them on, so what can i do?

Vga montor might be a high synic rate you need a proper old crt tv i would think
