Cheap working 99min banana cds are on AliExpress

Post by ac3t1ne »

I received a pack of 50 of these 99min cds, I have tested and they are working on Dreamcast (although it appears to be scrubbed out in the picture, they are the banana digital ones that used to be popular on dealextreme):

I haven't seen these disks so easily available and at a cheap price for years so I thought I'd give everyone a heads up (you can also buy smaller packs for even less).

Damn I used to get these all the time to help people out with 99 min versions of the Shenmue 2 English speech mod. I had to stop offering them because the discs stopped working for years there were just really bad batches that refused to work on DC. Even other people who previously burned them successfully had issues, so it wasn't our burners all going bad at once.

Glad to see others can get them again in working order, but now with GDEMU and other ODE solutions, there is not much need for them now when you can get a perfect version of that mod which has lossless audio. Not to mention perfect 1:1 GDI images working from the devices. A stack of those discs cost almost nearly as much as a GDEMU, so yeah that device gets more compelling when you see you will stop throwing money away for CDR's.

I still have a big stack of these discs. They always worked best on an old burner, that can burn really slow. It was the only reason I kept my old winXP laptop from 2005 around, perfect for burning 99min Dreamcast discs. However the drive finally did crap out, wont even burn 74/80 min CD-Rs anymore.

But as you said, with drive replacements now, the only people who want these are for repros.

Oh yea I'm sure this is a proper niche thing for anyone to want still.. Personally I haven't got a gdemu yet, perhaps due to having multiple dreamcasts, but they do look great!

I think perhaps some of my nostalgia for the system comes from acquiring, patching and burning the best rips as well (weird I know..).

Oh, I understand this. I just recently bought a MODE, but mainly bought it to future proof / build one ultimate dreamcast.
I will keep one dreamcast mostly stock though. I still like playing games off of discs, loading times and all. It's part of the whole experience for me, like how some people like to sit down and listen to a vinyl record.

did you get exactly this? is it really a 99 minute cd-r? I ask this, because in the body of the ad one of the photos shows a CD-R package that can be read, which is an 80-minute or 700MB CD-R.

Thank you very much, I was not able to notice the detail that reports up to 32x. I have a question to see with you Deluxx, since you mentioned that you used discs over 700mb.
Do you have anything different to do to record the games, or just put the cd in, and mark the overburn so that it uses the greatest capacity of the disc, and thus do the common recording process?
