Connecting DreamPi with a long telephone line
I'm trying to do something that might be a bit odd, but I'm hoping that it's doable. I have a living room space in my basement and then an office that is right next to it (on the other side of the living room wall). We have a retro corner setup in the Living Room and my wife is very particular about it not getting cluttered with junk. I want to get our Dreamcast online and I'm comfortable with setting up a DreamPi Server. My challenge is that I know that my wife will not want the dreampi and modem hanging out near the Dreamcast (I know they are small, but she really doesn't want anything extra like that in this space). So I'm hoping that I can setup the Dreampi in my office space and run a telephone wire through the wall so that it comes out behind the dreamcast. This way it's just the wire itself that will be in that part of the living room. This would be roughly a 50 foot telephone line. I'm concerned that a battery powered voltage inducer would not carry the proper about of power over that distance. So that's my first question. Am I correct that power delivery would be affected by the long phone line? If this is correct, is there a way to get enough power through that line so that I can keep the Dreampi hardware away from the living room space? I'm comfortable with soldering if needed. Thank you in advance for any advice, and yes I know that this situation is weird. Just doing what I can to make it work.

Re: Connecting DreamPi with a long telephone line
Ethernet can definitely go this distance. But Ethernet isn't also carrying power (unless it's POE with a POE power injector). My understanding is that the situation with Dreampi is unique because it requires the rj11 cable to be powered in order to carry the signal back and forth to the dreamcast. I've considered the version from the dreamcastlive shop, but I believe that it's just 9v over USB and I'm not sure if that works over a 50 foot distance. That's one of my questions.

I think the only way to know is to try it unless someone else is using a 50ft phone cable which is probably unlikely. lol

Re: Connecting DreamPi with a long telephone line
Right, I figured it was worth asking in case someone had run into issues with a longer cable. I think I read in an older thread that someone did have problems until they tried a shorter cable. I'm assuming that this likely would be an issue. Which brings up the second part of my question which is whether someone knows how to build an inducer that can provide higher voltage to balance this out. Let's say for example that we have 30v close to the inducer which degrades to 10v over 50 feet. This makes sense to me, but I'm not an expert which is why I'm asking questions.

That's great to hear! I was hoping that this would be easy. Given that the official version with the built-in inducer is out of stock, does anyone have a schematic for building my own? I've read that you can use a dc-to-dc board along with the Dell Modem to create your own, but I've only seen it mentioned in text. I need a schematic to know what to solder and to where.SEGA RPG FAN wrote:I've connected my dreampi modem with built in LVI to my home's phone wiring just fine. That's many many feet.
