Will live ubuntu cd work with PC-DC Sever?

Post by Favrenation »

Hi, the thing is that I dont know if ubuntu lets you save your settings on a live cd. I know puppy even lets you save on the cd but there modem support is terrible. Even my built in modem wouldnt work. If it doesnt what user freindly linux distro will? User friendly as in mint or gentoo. Also is there a modem that is like 20 dollars that is external so it doesnt require a volatge inducer? Specifically i would like a usb modem but serial would work I guess I hust want something cheap. Thanks in advance!

Ubuntu live wont save settings, thats the main characteristic of a live distro.

Regarding distros, ive tested Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, Gentoo, Knoppix, and a few more(its been a long time since my linux era xD) and the most friendly one has always been Ubuntu to me.

As for modem support, i think, again, Ubuntu would be the best option. For the simple reason it has the most support, so i bet it has the most modem support too.

Or maybe you should have a look at the router live distro kind. Such as monowall, live cd router and coyote linux. I bet they are many others, but these are the one i can think of right now.

But above all, avoid usb modems. If you used linux before, you must have realized its usb support is pretty lame.

I hope that helps. Keep me informed, as you know id like to make a virtual machine for a PC DC server, so your progress on this interests me a lot :)

My idea is that after you told me this is to now have a puupy linux cd becuase I can save the data but try to find a modem that works or Ill just run ubuntu inside of windows becuase I really dont want to instiall and dualboot linux and windows becuase this my parents computer. If it is a serial modem does that need a voltage inducer? Thanks a lot for the heads up man! ;)

No idea honestly. the only dial up modem o ever had, besides dc, was a pci one. that one didnt need any kind of external alimentation, just plug and play.
