Hello friend, welcome to the forum!
This myth has been around for a long time. The general consensus is that earlier, poorly optimized CDIs would make the drive work harder, BUT... everything wears out from normal use. Many gamers have played burned discs for decades. Indie developers release pressed discs which have the data arranged in the same format. This myth is way overblown for the DC, it's not as trash like the PS1 hardware.
