Dreampi can't connect - fixed thx pcwzrd13

Post by sgmx »

Hi,

Well strangely my Dreamcast can't connect online anymore while everything seems to be ok in terms of configuration and I didn't modify anything at my end. My Dreampi IP is well set to 192.168.1.98, it is in my DMZ.
The Dreampi boots well and my Modem has all its LED green. Whatever game I select I have the same error so it is not game specific but a global issue.
A screenshot always better :)

You have an IP conflict. The Pi should not have the .98 IP address as that's reserved for the Dreamcast. I'm not sure if you manually set the IP for the Pi or not but you'll need to change it to something else. If it's set via DHCP, the easiest thing to do is to exclude the .98 address from DHCP in your router settings. You can usually do this by changing the range. Just change the "End address" to .97 so it won't hand out the .98 address to any other devices.

Many Thanks pcwzrd13, actually I understood meanwhile why I faced this sudden issue, I recently switched some hardware (psu, gdemu etc..) between my dreamcast including the modem... and the one I plugged was not configured properly, I forgot that and kept trying in vain..
My router was initially correctly configured with a .42 IP and since it kept failing and thus changed it to the forbidden ip .98 :) So I put back the right configured modem and put another IP .97 to avoid the reserved .98 for the DC, everything is back to normal.

most likely the modem is simply faulty.
the modem cannot be configured correctly or incorrectly, because the settings are stored in the memory of the Dreamcast itself, if the Dreamcast is configured correctly, then you can insert any modem and it will work

Oh ok I thought the settings were stored in the modem in a kind of internal memory which obviously is wrong 😅 So tomorrow I’ll retest it and most probably it will end up in the garbage.
NB: a jap modem should work in a pal console I think, just a difference in speed if I’m not wrong ?

yes, all modems are compatible.
regardless of the modem region, the speed will always be the same 33600 bps, this happens because we emulate a telephone line with a regular modem.
do not rush to throw the modem in the trash, I very often encountered the problem of solder degradation on the RJ11 connector, most problematic modems are helped by soldering the connector into which the telephone cable is inserted

Ok i’ve tested it again and I can confirm it is dead, I have tested jap modems and they work fine as expected. Thanks for the advice I’ll check if something needs to be soldered.
