Would you recomend firefox

Yesterday i had a problem i never imagined.

I have IE8 and the latest chrome, i mostly use IE as i can lauch several favorite websites at one and i can refreash all at once if needed.

Now, the latest IE is not supported for windows xp so i have to stick with IE8, meaning i am planing in moving over to firefox, afterall the latest browser supports XP and i believe this is great.

As for the problem, yesterday when i was on google images, i opened several tabs and then while they were loading i checked each tab 1 by 1, after some time my HD starts doing something weird, all of the sudent it starts working, but i wasn't searching or doing anything intensive besides using IE.

A few seconds later, new icons, pop ups and messages apear on my computer, i had a fake antivirus installed, just like that.

After finding a way to actually remove this anoying fake antivirus, i tought to myself "how in the hell did i get it?"
Normally they have to go trough the firewall, and the fake antivirus did get past my firewall, the reason is simple, it seems these junk programs automaticly install when you visit infected websites, they don't even ask if you want the stuff or not, it's something automatic and there is nothing i could do, since the firewall alows IE to acsess the web, everything done was basicly alowed.

Now, i feel very vulnerable right now and i am pissed at IE for alowing something i didn't want.
I am thinking in switching forever to firefox, but i must know for sure the same thing won't happen.

So my question is, regarding to security and security only, is firefox better?, does it alow programs to install automaticly?

It's true that usually infected websites require "codecs" in order to see a certain feature and they ask if you want it, but this time, nothing was asked, without my concent i became infected.
I am very concerned, i tought i was safe to a good extent (i take all safety procedures), but a simple and lame fake antivirus was alowed.
It feels like i have been hacked by a noob, it's insulting and i blame IE

i love firefox do it and the cool thing wen u down lode it go back to the firefox web page and click under add ons 1000,000 of them i love it firefox just went to firefox fox 4

insatall NoScript and Adblock

Yes, that was the kind of stuff i needed, i had adblock but not the noscript plugin.

Works nicely and i believe that will stop infected pages from installing automaticly any software.

and perhaps get a decent firewall/antivirus, like NOD 32

Firewall doesn't do anything, i gave permission to IE, if IE does anything, then the firewall accepts
The antivirus detected the problem, but the damage had already been done, i still had to remove some mallware afterwards.

beleave me firefox is very good

I usually use chrome. You can also try this out. It is faster than firefox. Firefox is also good, some time i used it but not every time.
