Sturmwind incoming this quarter!!

Post by DCUltrapro »

Hey guys,

I don't see much on here about Sturmwind, there was a brief thread about it in July last year but nothing since. I've been in communication with RedSpot Games, specifically Max Schaarl. Here is all the info I have so far on the game, I'm pasting my story that I posted on my gamespot blog:

===============
The latest in a long and wonderful legacy for Dreamcast is about to be unleashed and it looks like it could be the best yet!!

A game called Sturmwind is being developed by Red Spot Games, the people responsible for last years Rush Rush Rally Racing game. While RRRR was purely a retro experience in total 2d from a top down POV, Sturmwind is much more in keeping with Dreamcasts current legacy: being the home of amazing 2d/3d side scroller shooters!!

Check out the following info:

LATEST!! Live presentation/Demo in May 2011:

Personally I think this game looks absolutely amazing, and for the incredible price of 35 euros I don't think you can go wrong!! The graphics apparently utilize the Dreamcasts power properly, unlike the Neo Geo ports etc it cranks the DC's power to a level that I have not seen since Borderdown or Ikaruga. Proving that, given the right amount of love and energy some truly amazing games could be made for DC even after its officially died.

Anyway enjoy, if anyone gets this game you can upload your highscores apparently, should be a nice change to dust of the DC for a new title again! I have already pre-ordered my copy and CANNOT WAIT!!
===============

Max is the CEO at Redspot and he has sent me a few emails, one of his latest comments was:

-----------------------------
ME: As your last release was R4 which was a racing game, to move from that to a shooter like this, I hope your next title will be something equally different, possibly a 3rd person action or even RPG? I guess I will just have to carry on wishing and wait and see but for now I just wanted to thank you and also your colleagues and congratulate you on your continued hard work and commitment to the Dreamcast cause!

MAX: To be honest, we have different concepts here but we are very developer friendly and let them create their own game design and concept. So actually I can't promise you anything, bit chances are high that we will see another game genre soon on Dreamcast.

Have a nice day, and again, thanks for ordering!
-----------------------------

I can't wait for this game!

Best regards
Max

A new genre? Nice, I sure hope it's going to be a 2D fighter. Why has nobody ever attempted to make a homebrew fighter before? It boggles my mind. Sure, I can safely say that it is a pain to code, but drawing sprites and a few backgrounds shouldn't be as time-consuming as creating everything for a shmup, right?

Back on topic, Sturmwind sounds awesome. Six years of development surely paid off. :mrgreen:

yeah the game looks the nuts, can't wait!

I always thought the Dreamcast was the best console for 2d fighters personally anyway, it has SOOOOOO many of them there's really no need for another at the moment, although any new release is welcome in my opinion, I'd just love to see an action adventure or something, I always felt that some games on DC didn't immerse you enough, its still my fave console because soo many games you can just pick up and play but only a handful of games really grab you in terms of story, such as Headhunter, Grandia 2, SOA, Maken X, maybe a few others including the obvious 2 shenmues... hell even Nomad Soul was an awesome concept, ok it was pretty ropey but something like that with nice simply combat and platforming would be amazing for dc. But that's just me :)

Nice read there. I learn something new every day. I am a total FPS whore, so I am glad we have an engine like Half-Life's to create new mods that utilize the raw power of the DC, so that genre is covered by homebrew devs.

I will agree RPG games are lacking on the DC, I would love to see a hack and slash game like Secret of Mana, or a like game.

I actually went back and played Dragons Blood again recently and I was actually deeply surprised by it, I think a game like that with maybe more action and exploration and slightly smoother controls would be the absolute nuts!

I'd be happy with Duranik or anyone else releasing anything for the Dreamcast, as long as they start to actually dev them for the console from scratch rather than just port Naomi or Neo Geo games... a nice new FPS would be awesome although to be honest I think I might struggle with the single analogue stick now that I'm so into my Crysis, Halo and COD on xbox (hopefully these aren't swear words here? lol)

Hehe, as long as you think of the face buttons as the same thing as W, A, S, D keys on a keyboard, and use them just like that, the fps games you get used to over time. If you grew up playing 007 Goldeneye on N64, then you should be right at home with the Half-Life mods.

Speaking of 007, we have a Half-Life 007 mod you can check out right here.

cool, might have a look at it, I actually forgot how good the whole FPS game control was on Dreamcast you know, just played some Unreal Tournament (Shitty PAL version which just had tournies and practices) and then went online for some Q3A, it connects up nicely and I found about 12 matches but nothing active, just a couple bots, no real players. Are there any other addresses that I should try to get to play against people or is that all there is? If that is it then when do you guys play most? Is there a regular match at all? God I'd love it if they could get UT back online one day!!

So anyway this year looks awesome for me and my DC, being back online with PSO and Q3A, still able to play Starlancer and then theres Sturmwind and Giest incoming, how nuts is that?
