Soul Reaver still a great game

Post by mazonemayu »

So I decided to pop it in again after trying Nightmare Creatures 2 last night, just to check how it looked in VGA. I just wanted to see how this oldie held up. I just played it for 2 hours straight & am totally drawn in again. I played this when it came out & remember liking it a lot, can't remember if I ever finished it though; been such a long time & all...
It all looks in VGA, specially for being a first gen DC game (& a psx port), I expected far worse, but its great, also I had forgotten how awesome the soundtrack is. The scenery & atmosphere are just spot on. I'm totally gonna stick to impaling vampires again for the next few days or so  I had totally forgotten that you kill stuff that way in the game

Anyone else like this game, or has played it (again) lately?

Oh yes, I've played and defeated it a few times and I love it. I like the gothic theme and atmosphere plus the puzzles which are spot on in terms of difficulty. There are so many facets to the game, it never gets boring. Great graphics, gameplay and interesting bosses. I was so looking forward to the second game before it was cancelled, so am about to start it on ps2.

I always look forward to playing DC games through VGA for the first time, it can be quite a revelation.

I started playing it some time ago and liked it but after a while it stopped being fun, every room looked too much like the others and I couldn't find my way back to where I stopped playing every time I loaded the game.
Also the puzzles were too "ps1 style", like, they all involved moving crates and all that, it's too boring.
The fighting and platforming were very fun but the rest just ruined the game for me.

had it on psx before I got my Dreamcast, enjoyed it but never finished it!

I remeber it seemed awesome that you could rip spike off of walls etc and use as weapons!
Dreamcast, it's still thinking.

I won't lie to you, when I first played the game I was totally disoriented and spent hours wandering around feeling lost and helpless ! It took me ages to finally get my bearings and move forward with it. The early frustration eventually disappeared and I subsequently flew through the game.

I think you're right to an extent about it being slightly old fashioned. But then it is a 12 yr old game ! Crates were overused in those days ! lol There aren't that many 'crate moments' in the game though. Of course the best ever use of crates was in Shenmue (yay!).

I concur! Needs more forklifts! ;)

I never got very far in the game. I got to one part early on and couldn't figure out what to do. Maybe I'll give it another go.
