My $20 Broadband Adapter!

Post by pcwzrd13 »

I did it! I was able to find a Broadband Adapter for around my $20 budget, sort of. I actually found a Dreamcast system on eBay (with some accessories) for $55 shipped. I noticed the modem was removed and shown on the floor next to the system. I thought to myself, hmmm, why would someone remove it? Was it just for the picture? So I emailed the seller asking if there was another modem on the system itself and if so what did it say on the input (LAN or Line). I received a response saying there was one on the Dreamcast and it says LAN on it! JACKPOT! Needless to say I purchased it right away. The system also came with 4 VMUs, two controllers, a third party memory card, and boxed mouse. I figure I can resell those for a minumum of around $30 leaving the Broadband adapter at a fantastic price of $25! YAY ME! :D

Proof you ask? I will post picks as soon as I get it.

Wow! What a great catch! I believe ya. That's exactly how I got my official DC VGA box recently for basically free! Some fine gentle man was selling a DC system with a few dozen games and accessories. I noticed that he mentioned VGA box on the list but was difficult to see what kind of VGA box it was as the VGA box was barely visible through the pic he had of the bundle. I took a chance and ultimately won the bid war at a cool 60 bucks. As soon as my packaged arrived lo and behold I was correct! :D I got an offical VGA box, a DC console, 2 controllers, VMU, Jump pack, fishing rod and a bunch of almost mint DC software! I sold almost all the DC games (I already had most anyways) and made back $40. Oh what a happy day that was lol!

I know the difference. It's not the LAN adapter. Both the broadband and lan adapters say LAN next to the cable input.

...and I appreciate it. ;) I will admit there's a tiny chance it may be the LAN adapter but it's highly unlikely. The seller is just a lady selling her son's Dreamcast. The chances that he imported a LAN adapter from Japan (which only works with the Japanese browser) are slim to none.

That's uncanny as I got my own BBA in a similar way. Just found it connected to a stock DC I bought secondhand. Actually, I've never really checked whether it's the Lan Adaptor or not - you've got me worried now ! lol

It's quite strange how many things DC-related I've bought only to discover hidden extras. I bought a box of DC stuff a couple of years ago which turned out to have twenty copies of the latest Panet Web browser discs. I flogged them(all but one) for quite a tidy profit. Also I ordered and paid for one copy of Cosmic Smash and ended up being sent three copies, two of them sealed ! And the amount of times I've bought a game and found two games inside the case is unreal

A quick way to tell if its a BBA or a Lan Adapter, if the original stickers are still on it, is to look at the stickers. The Lan Adapter has a sticker that clearly identifies it as a HIT-0300 Lan Adapter. The BBA generally has a barcode sticker that has the adapter's MAC address on it.

Of course, if the stickers are removed, there's not an easy way of telling which it is, short of trying to use it with something (homebrew or otherwise).
