Two questions regarding Japanese games

Post by Dynamite »

1. I notice that my JP games (SF3 Third Strike and Capcom vs SNK 2) have bigger cases than my US games. You have to put them side by side to notice, but I think it is because of the door(?). The door on the JP games are bigger because the tabs that hold the booklet are higher in height than the ones on the US door.

It's impossible to explain just by text, you have to see it for yourself but unfortunately since I don't own any other JP games these are the only examples that I can give. If you try to put the booklet for SF3 or CvSNK2 into the door of a US game case, it won't fit, because the tabs are too low.

This is a real long shot here, but I was wondering if anyone knew where to possibly get a replacement door for the cases. Right now I think the only possible way is to just spend $5 on some cheap crappy JP game on eBay and use that case. :(

2. What exactly is a spine card? It's just a piece of paper that goes over the case? How does it stay in place? :)

1) you can't spend $5 on just "any" japanese game, as most games come in regular cases, the only games that come in the thicker variant are games that actually have a thicker booklet so you need to hunt for such a case

2) Image

this my friend is a spine card (above = sonic adventure 10th anniversary special edition), they come with almost any jap game and/or even music cd. its just a fancy something they fold round the spine of the box before it's shrinkwrapped.once unpacked, the spinecard will fit the box (booklet side) perfectly.

as you might have guessed, a jap game can only be called complete if this comes with it

hope I've been of help

It's not just the "case door". It's the entire jewel case that's larger! Take out the back art encased inside the jewel case and place it inside of a standard sized CD case. You will see that the folding flaps (where the game is labeled in Japanese and in English on the left and right tab respectively) will not fit properly. The tabs will stick out of the case.

The thicker Japanese cases are really nice. They're a lot sturdier than standard jewel cases.

This subject comes up quite a lot at Dreamcast forums. Where the hell can you find those thicker japanese cases ? The only place I knew that sold them was a site in Japan that closed a few years ago. Subsequent searching on the web has proven unsuccessful :(

Were PS1 cases thicker than standard ? Mmmm.....not sure about that. Probably not.

Anyway, if anyone does ever find those thicker cases for sale, please post the address here !

Save this address and post it everywhere. These are replacement Japanese thicker CD cases. Japanese amazon doesn't tend to ship abroad, so you would have to buy them and get them sent to a proxy in Japan. Between the JPN domestic shipping, the international shipping, and the fee to the proxy, it might be like $30 for you to buy 5 $1 CD cases... but if you need to complete your collection, what else are you going to do ;)

-They even come with your choice of white or black plastic trays, so they are truly the proper Dreamcast replacement. The link to the product is here, the price is for individual cases.

Thanks for posting that, they look to be absolutely perfect replacements. Shame about the lack of english and the high cost. Like you say though, if you need them then I guess it's a small price to pay.
