Hey all,
This is a really funny story. I was on Sega of America's message boards and they had a thread about how Sega should start supporting Dreamcast online gaming again. I then linked to Dreamcast-Talks website and DConlinegaming.com.
When the Site Administrator caught wind of this he promptly deleted my links off my post and locked the thread.
I don't know about you but isnt this a little extreme?

Yes, this is extreme, but the usual stance. I am sure it breaks a Terms and Conditions statement that you agreed to when joining an official SEGA board. They (SEGA) cannot condone private servers and the like. Hopefully they wont ever try to cut us down, but obviously the games were designed with specific servers in mind - hacking the games is a bit illegal in itself - though it's not for commercial reasons, just for fun.TheCoolinator wrote: I don't know about you but isnt this a little extreme?
SEGA won't support the Dreamcast again. 5000 people going mad about Dreamcast these days, 10 years after its birth, is nothing compared to XBOX or PS3 or Wii. There are 300,000 playing halo 3 online right now...

Wow, I never new there were so many gamers out there with no taste.

Good points though.

Oh God, yes there are!
If gamers had taste, Sony would have died when it tried to compete in the field and we'd be playing something different right now.
Saturn was cancelled early because of the Playstation.
Dreamcast was brought out.
People waited for PS2.
We all cried. A few of us died. Most of us died a little bit inside.

I noticed you have Dreamcast Junk Yard as your signature. I go to that site everyday. Nice

Re: Linking to Dreamcast Servers gets your thread locked
Coolinator, I read the link you provided and...
Illegal my @$#%. We bought a product to go online and Sega decides we can't use it anymore. That's like buying a car and then be told you can only drive it at home, not on the street. The salesman said it is capable of being driven on the road but the car company says "we won't let you"!
It says online on the cover of every Dreamcast game that can go online - that's illegal. I've not seen a single disclaimer on any box. It's not a matter of expiration or some "understood" thing we all now have learned about the game industry - it's about telling people we are online and then pulling the plug. If Sega had any professional savvy, they would have bidded out the servers to a new host instead of just killing the servers. Think about it, they could (and would have) made money bidding it out instead of pulling the plug and getting nothing for their money. That's what we do in the A/V industry, we "sub it out" when needed or we bid on projects.
Well, Sega, you lost $$$ there and there's no royalty, tariff or tax break for you! There was enough users in 2002 and so on that if you kept it online, many would have stayed with it.

Re: Linking to Dreamcast Servers gets your thread locked
That's what we were trying to discuss before the freakin' moderator went nuts on us. The best thing for the faltering system was to keep supporting it through software and online but discontinue the hardware production. As you said Dobbs that would not only keep fans happy BUT it would continue to pull in some cash. Also with all the technological leaps we have had in the last 9 years I am sure it would have been more and more cost effective to keep the servers running.
Good point, Dobbs
(High Five)
Also if you guys need any help with DC or gaming articles I would be happy to write one and send it over to you guys through E-mail. Hell I don't do anything at work anyway except research DC stuff and argue with jerks on Sega of America's message board.
