How the heck do you do the more extensive sword attack combos?

I've collected multiple upgrades for the sword from the powerups, but it just seems that by holding B all the character ever does is the one swipe. I thought tapping B a few times also didn't do it. Do I have to wiggle the controls a certain way?

I havent played in a long long long time but if I remember right all you is level it up....ALOT then ull be able to do multiple swipes.What I used to do to entertain myself was , during a run through just level one thing to its max, whether it was sheild ,sword or gun.At high levels they own.I might be wrong since I havent played it in over a year or two.

Hmm, I think I collected every powerup in level 1 and 2, flipping them to be sword powerups, and I still don't think I had a new attack. do I have to press any particular button to confirm a powerup or something?

They also level up depends on use if I remember right.So I didnt depend on the power ups too much and just spammed the sword to force it to level up.I rememeber for the sheild I would just go up to the enemy and stay in its face(so close the sheild touches it) and after a while the sheild would level up to the point it starts shooting little versions of itself as a counter attack.My memory is a bit hazy so I could be wrong.
