fighting games and shump ??s

Post by sega_SHARK »

I have an Agetec stick coming in the mail and might be interested in doing a Swana button and stick mod to it.

The mod that I have seen on you tube replaces the restrictor plate with an eight way instead of a four way. Is an eight way preferred for fighters or shmups? I have read somewhere that shmup players prefer a different "load out" to their arcade sticks than fighting game players.

Also, what's the big advantage to micro-switched buttons? Quieter? Faster?

I'm interested in playing both fighters and shmups. Just leave the stick stock?

Any insight greatly appreciated.

4-way and 8-way is not what you mean. There is no diagonal input on a 4-way stick. A stick like that would be used for Pac-Man for instance, or Tetris. You mean square or octagonal gates. In which case I would say square for shooters, octagonal for fighters...

4 way restrictors are the standard in japanese arcade for both genres. Stick to a 4 way. 8way is for chumps that need help with joystick motions.

I really don't like square for fighting games with circular moves. It just doesn't feel right. For shooters however I do like it. The official DC stick is great for shooters IMO...

There's also circular to consider...

Understood. I have no issues with fighters on square gate with regards to motions. Square gates are also very precise for charge based characters in fighters (Bison, Vega, Guile, Remy etc.).

I like square gates more, even for circular motions. I feel like it's easier to control your motions with a square gate.

okay, I'm gonna leave it "stock" for a while with the square gate. I guess I'll have to see for myself if those "spin moves" warrant a gate modification. Thanks :D
