Bought a DC VGA box but I can see vertical lines

Post by Leprekaun »

Hi all. I just bought a DC VGA box (eBay listing) but I noticed some faint vertical lines running down the screen. I thought maybe there is a loose connection but I made sure that everything was connected properly and it made no difference.

I messed around with my monitor settings to see if I could fix it. After failing that, I selected the "Memory Recall" of my monitor which did improve the picture slightly. I then loaded up Shenmue (what else, right? :)) to see it in VGA glory but I then could notice in the opening sequence that there were some vertical portions of the screen were brighter than others, and this is a clear difference, not faint. I know many will say that I should have gone for the official Sega VGA cable but I can't afford to pay $130 for a cable :( which is why I got the one I got. So is this something you think it's worth returning back to the seller and getting another one or does this sound more like a design flaw of the box and it would make no difference getting a replacement? Thanks.

No, I would have said you should have gone for an actual 3rd party brand VGA box from various manufactures like Naki, Performance, Pelican etc or reputable VGA makers like Cabou's VGA cables. Those aftermarket VGA peripherals are pretty shady.

Anywho, if the vendor can honor returns or at least and exchange, do it. Good luck.

I had the same problem with a cheap one that I bought. They never grounded the cable shield which caused interference. If you're handy with a soldering iron and multimeter it's a 5 minute fix otherwise you may want to exchange or return for a different brand/model.

Get a CRT SONY PVM, VGA is overrated and some games work with it but Capcom VS SKN looks a bit shit in VGA.

See the blacks are so fucking sweet and your other consoles look class on it also at low-rez :D

and there is always the bonus of being able to smash the CRT in old school fashion such as early rock stars, you can throw it out of your window while potentially hurting your spine because these beasts are so fucking heavy, your muscles will rip and you will feel the burning desire for scan line junkieness. Sitting in your own filth because you haven't been able to wash or brush your teeth because the lines have you in a hypnotic trance, foaming at the mouth but these are probably the best days of your life.

Hopefully you find the light and get indoctrinated into the cult that is scanline heaven.

I still own nearly every VGA adapter made for the DC and I can tell you that this one you are recommending is of dubious quality at best! I DO believe you when you say it works perfectly for you as I also have this same cable which I also bought over 8 years ago and I've never had a problem with it ever. The issue here is that over the years the build quality and assembly for this particular cable has quite frankly gone down the shithole.

Overrated. Nope. A matter of preference between Standard Def and Enhanced Def, absolutely, but VGA overrated, hardly. Many games on a VGA output look simply stunning. Resident Evil CV, 2K Sports games, GGX, MKGold, PowerStone series, TXR2, Crazy Taxi series Porject Justice and so on, look amazing in 640x480. As a matter of fact, just about every game that originated from NAOMI hardware should be played in VGA considering how these games were originally designed with 31KHz display in mind as well as standard 15KHz of course.
It's not just "some" games that are compatible with VGA. The majority of the Dreamcast library supports VGA. Only handful of games Do Not.
