Dreamcast Fan Modding Help!

I am currently working on modding my Sega Dreamcast with a better fan. I am replacing the stock Dreamcast fan with a new fan I found online at:

It is a Delta AFB0305HA-AF00 fan.

I soldered the wires together correctly I believe to the old connector on the stock Dreamcast fan. When I turn on the system the fan runs beautifully. The trouble I am having now is that after the system boots up after the Sega Dreamcast screen the screen goes black. Nothing happens after that. I have tried different cables and same thing. I tried soldering the wires differently then the fan just doesn't turn on. So I believe I had them wired correctly. The new Delta fan I am trying to install is a 5VDC with a third wire for speed sensor too.

What I am thinking is that maybe the fan is drawing too much power and the system shuts down afterwards. (From what I have read on forums)

The connections I have for soldering the old connector and the new fan wires are (Old Connector listed first then new fan wires)

Red to Red
Blue to Black
Orange to Blue

I tried soldering the Blue to Blue and Orange to Black and the fan wouldn't even turn on when I powered the system on.


Also a few weird things also happened. When I plugged in my composite cables the colors were correct but when I plugged in my VGA cable, the colors were different every time I turned it on, like pink or green. Don't know if that would help but I am trying to list every possible problem to find my solution!

Can someone please help me!? I really want this new fan installed. It's pretty nice and I would love to use it! Thank you so much!

Looks like the fan that is stock uses less power. this means that you should probably connect to the power board and not the controller board. you may be able to use the 5v connection off the board and use the ground for neg.

I am not thinking too far into what wires go to what place. you will have to find out which is positive and which wire is neg. hopefully this helps .

Did the fix work? I'm in the same boat - upgraded my DC with an Evercool EC 3010 5V 30mm 8000 RPM fan, power draw is apparently more than the original fan because it'll display the bootup screen before the video signal is lost.

Please let me know if you tried connecting the fan to the power board.

I remember adding a PC fan to an overclocked Dreamcast once. Worked like a charm. I do also remember connecting it to the pins that connect the mainboard to the powerboard. So doing that should work...

How did you connect it? Did you just solder it to the pins? Does it matter which pins?

I found the original DC fan on a Chinese website for 3X as much as I paid for the Evercool, now I'm debating whether I want to just cut my losses and get the original fan, or what. The Evercool is 1,000 RPM less and moves .5 CFM more air, so I'm wondering if the RPM difference is confusing the Dreamcast. Do you remember if your PC fan was 9000 RPM like the original DC fan?

You need to connect the fan to the right pins. That could be either 3.3V, 5V or 12V depending on the fan you use. The connection to the power board has all three of those, plus a few grounds...



Keep in mind it's been years since I did that mod. So my memory is a little fuzzy. I might have had to jump through a few hoops to get it working that I'm forgetting now...

yes, the board has 3 grounds inbetween the 12v and 5v areas on the pins. The board should also be labeled right in front of the pins
