Dreamcast stopped reading discs
Hello everyone. Well I got my dreamcast in the mail today! I played it for about 45 minutes and then out of nowhere, it stops reading discs. Whenever I turn the console on I can hear the disc drive make a little beep, then things start going crazy. I get a really loud hum and abnormally loud little weird squeaky sound that all CD players make. When I put a game it, it will attempt to start but not get past the "produced under Sega blah blah" screen. If I put the game in after I already turn the console on it will show the same screen but then go back to the home menu. I've looked up methods online already to fix it, and I'm going to make an attempt to adjust the speed with the screw on the back of the console. The only thing is, when I opened it up, the laser looked different than what I've seen on videos on other websites. I assume this is because the console has a bunch of "GameStop Refurbished" stickers on the back of the console. Now the screw that adjusts the speed doesn't look so much like a screw on this after market laser and I'm not sure if it's even turntable... I can take pictures if anybody wants. Thanks to anyone who helps/ replies soon.

I have the same issue but only with CD-Rs. (GD-ROMs still work.) The only solution I can think of is to replace the laser. Most likely there is another solution, but that's all I can come up with.

Re: Dreamcast stopped reading discs
As far as the laser looking different the dreamcasts came with Many different parts made from all over the world and came with different drive parts too, Japan, China, Taiwan, Indonesia all over!
And adjusting that tiny screw in the lens is not adjusting the speed, its adjusting the power to the laser! Doing this Too high will burn it out! I suggest do not do this unless you are careful you know what you are doing =)
But It could be just having trouble reading discs it could be old and worn. A good cleaning of the lens could fix it! Do not use alcohol or harsh cleaners, and using water will do nothing lol . Refer to this post here and try this stuff! It renews the lens and its great for everything! =D
Have fixed many dreamcasts and other drives and dvd players , old sunglasses lots of things!
