The *Dreamcast* Handheld games

Post by Green Ranger »

In the Year 2000, Tiger Electronics released a series of Pixel LCD games under the brand 'Arcade Games', which all resembled arcade cabinets. They were small enough to play in the hand or serve as a tabletop device. The tops of each game could close down for easy storage and portability. Each of their 'Arcade Games' had a detachable joystick, A-D labelled buttons and additional buttons to pause the game, reset the game, toggle the sound and toggle the games on/off.

So why is the word *Dreamcast* in asterisks? Because all the titles in their 'Arcade Games' series were released on the Dreamcast- Q*bert, NFL Blitz 2000, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, Hydro Thunder and Sonic Adventure- essentially making them Dreamcast handheld ports. Thanks to the display (which was similar to Tiger's Game.com tech), all the games were capable of displaying various animations, multiple stages, enemies, etc. They even had genuine sound effects taken straight from the original Dreamcast Games!

I wanted to know if anyone here owns these unique Tiger games and if so, what do you think of them- are they still enjoyable games despite their limitations? How much content from their console counterpart were they able to port over to these devices? What is their replay value? And, if you do own any are you willing to share photos and/or post videos of them in action?

I'm sure you guys all know about the Sonic Adventure one, but if not here's a link to some information on the device http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Adventure_(LCD_game), as well as a video showing gameplay. For a Tiger Handheld, it's not a bad novelty piece!

I happen to have the Q*bert game and that took a while to attain. Overall they're quite hard to come by and besides Sonic Adventure, there's very little information about these games on the internet, so I think they're unique and rare enough to warrant the interest. :)

I've never even seen one of these. I figured the LCD market shifted from the old Tiger 16 and 32 bit licenses to the 101010101010101023983u490823754912 in 1 game machines.

Like I said- unique, rare and hard to come by. :)
In other countries the market for single game LCD devices is still going strong. Looking at the video of this rendition of Sonic Adventure, it's probably safe to say that the replay value isn't very high, unless you have the desire to play it again using the cheat codes of course.

From a technical standpoint the game is fascinating to watch and I wonder how much these Tiger 'Arcade Games' originally retailed for when they hit the shelves. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a single advertisement for any of these devices back in the day.

Looks like they were about $20 in 1993, which is what I remember them being later, maybe some were cheaper (non-licensed ones especially).

That catalog though shows the less technical, single screen LCD games from '93. I'm specifically referring to the Dreamcast 'Arcade Games' released in 2000 with the Pixel LCD screens. :)

No problem. Though it's funny, the Jurassic Park handheld was the first Tiger LCD game I ever owned.

I'm assuming no one has anymore information on these devices? Did I post this in the wrong place? Should this be moved to the 'Handhelds/Mobile Gaming' forum? :?

Wow, I never would have thought that Tiger Electronics released LCD versions of Dreamcast games! That’s such a unique piece of gaming history, and now I’m really curious how well they adapted those games to that format.

By the way, I’ve been searching for a game I played in my childhood, but I can’t remember its name. It was a card game on a portable console, possibly Game Boy or something similar. The main idea was that you participated in tournaments and competed against different characters using a card-based strategy. I think it was similar to poker or blackjack but with additional mechanics – some cards could change the rules in the middle of a match, and there were special abilities you could activate. I also remember that the game had some kind of storyline, and the further you progressed, the tougher the opponents became.

If anyone remembers something like this, let me know because I’ve been trying to find it for a long time! All card games bring me a strong sense of nostalgia, and sometimes, just for fun, I pick something here to play that includes card-based games. It’s usually convenient because you can read a detailed description before playing to get a sense of what to expect.

Since creating this thread I picked up two more of these- Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and NFL Blitz 2000.

Ready 2 Rumble has a 10 selectable characters and a hidden one (the final boss which can be attained via cheat code). Out of the three devices I own, Q*bert and Ready 2 Rumble are my favorites. The only one I'd want to pick up now is Sonic Adventure, but whenever that pops for sale up it's usually overpriced so I'll wait until I found one that isn't.

You know what though? I wouldn't be surprised if each device had access to more than one game via a switch in its internal circuitry, similar to what was discovered with the Tiny Arcade & Mini Arcade machines shown here-
