Can I use DVD-R's and if so would it cause any damage?

If it's not obvious I'm new to this. I recently got a NTSC-J Dreamcast and wanted to check out some of the homebrew games and I have a lot of DVD-Rs. I know CD-Rs are recommended but I don't have any.

It can not read dvd disks at all cant read cd-rw's ether only cdrs and mil cds and gdrom

No read. This was one of the very few mistakes they made in 1997/1998 when developing the Dreamcast. Btw, the biggest thing that killed the Dreamcast was the money sucking vacuum cleaner known as the Sega $aturn...lol.
