Hidden & Dangerous GDEMU

Post by retro »

I can't get the GDI image for Hidden & Dangerous working on my GDEMU.

I have tried the TOSEC GDI image, and also the GDI image in this forum.

Both of them get stuck at the PRESS START screen, and nothing happens beyond that.

Am I missing something? Could it be a problem with my gdemu.ini?

Below is the lines from my gdemu.ini file.

Code: Select all

open_time = 2000
detect_time = 2000
reset_goto = 1
image_tests = 0
read_limit = 0
Thank you.

Firstly, the read_limit parameter should not be set to 0. Here's an explanation from the GDEMU Operation page:

Code: Select all

read_limit = N
Where N is natural number in range 600 to 1250 (in KiB/s), or 0 to disable and -1 for automatic limit.
If enabled (N <> 0), GDEMU limits media read speed to better match actual GD-ROM drive.
The automatic setting will only affect games that need it. Default is auto.
You can either remove the line altogether from the INI, or set it to -1.

That being said, I tried several configurations and cannot reproduce your issue. What type of GDEMU are you using? A 5.20.x clone, a 5.15 clone? What video output method are you using? What is your console region?

Noted regarding the read_limit settings, will change it to -1.

My GDEMU is a 5.15 clone, the SD card is a 400GB SanDisk card. One of those red/grey cards.
Video output is HDMI via the DCDigital HW2 mod.
The Dreamcast is a NTSC-U console.

Very odd!

Hopefully someone else has some ideas and can chime in. I don't have any pre-v5.20.x clones around to test, but I tested the following scenarios...

  • NTSC-U VA1 console + Authentic GDEMU on FW v5.20.5 + DCDigital HW2 (tested in both VGA mode and Cable-Detect mode)
  • NTSC-U VA1 console + Clone GDEMU on FW v5.20.5 + DCDigital HW2 (tested in both VGA mode and Cable-Detect mode)

It's possible that it's a firmware issue, and the version locked in your old clone GDEMU is incompatible. Hopefully someone else can test/verify soon!

PS: I also tried launching the games in two different ways. One, from openMenu, and two, by placing the game directly in the 01 folder.

I had a similar issue with Vanishing point and the USB-GDROM back in the day. (V1 device, was one of/if not the first to get one)

Vanishing point wouldn’t load past accessing data screen if I tried running the NTSC version on my DC, even thought I had a region free bios. Had to set the read only partition writable and change to NTSC to make it work. (Disable the mod after)

Spent ages trying to work that out, emailing MNEMO back and forth testing fixes. (A was the one who tested all NTSC, PAL exclusives on the device for him)

If you downloaded this from my thread in downloads please download again. Sometimes downloads from mega have problems but work again after redownload. I guess they try to do maintenance in the background but still allow downloads and files can get corrupted. Good luck.

This game deserves a second stick.

I tried to talk about that with the guy who build the vm2 and other amazing stuff for his new controller dreamconn + but he doesn't want to add it unfortunately.

Redownloaded, but the CRC32 hash values for all files were the same from what I previously downloaded.

track01.iso B1E2A378
track02.raw DD6FB107
track03.iso 00642227
track04.raw BFDF6078
track05.iso 715C586D

I guess it really is a GDEMU firmware problem

Unfortunately changing read_limit to -1 or removing the line didn't work :(

Even setting Hidden & Dangerous to folder 01 didn't work either
