Re: Do burnt Dreamcast games break down your GD-Drive?
Erm, don't want to sound cocky on my first post, and I'm sorry for reviving an old thread, but I don't think that's all there is to it. Low reflectivity in cheap quality cd-rs can make it harder for the laser to read, making it have to work harder, causing it to wear down more quickly. The best way to prevent this is to use high quality cds. The ones made in Japan (can't remember the company name at the moment) are very high quality, and should be easy on your DC.

To play burnt games on a ps2 you need good quality media. They recommended using verbatim or sony. Verbatim has had the best reviews though. Cheap ones will work with ps2 laser but will destroy very quickly. I heard fujifilm is good two. Those are for dvds's though. But same problem.

Actually, if I recall, the ones made in japan are called Taiyo Yuden, or something along those lines. This is just a manufacturer however, and multiple companies resell their discs as their own, including Maxell. Just check where it was made.

Yeah that is what I heard. They make the best discs while Verbatim etc resells them in the U.S.

That's right, only most companies buy discs from multiple manufacturers, so just because it's Verbatim doesn't mean it's Taiyo Yuden. Just check for 'made in Japan' and you'll be fine.Favrenation wrote:Yeah that is what I heard. They make the best discs while Verbatim etc resells them in the U.S.

That's a good idea. Get them at manufacturing prices. They're much cheaper that way.Favrenation wrote:You could proably buy the Yudens online.

Re: Do burnt Dreamcast games break down your GD-Drive?

Was wondering if burnt Dreamcast games ruin or make your GD-Reader inoperable.
They wouldn't damage your GD-ROM Drive at all, if burned disks damaged drives they would have not become to standard for storing media and files like they have become for the last decade or so. It wouldn't make sense for them to make a form of recording medium that would damage the device that it was suppost to be played back or recorded on. The reason for them not being able to damage the GD-ROM drive is because the Drives used in the Dreamcast units are basically CD-ROM Drives with a modified firmware bios that allows them to read the more compact tracks on a GD-ROM disk as well as the standard tracks found on CD-ROM and CD-DA(Audio CDs). Hope that this little bit of information helps and clears it up for you
