Questions before setting up Dreampi

I really hope that this one will work for you.
It seems there are 2 versions of this modem floating around

Here's the one I have (looks the same as the one that kazade linked on his blog, but it doesn't work since it is a pure softmodem)

Basically the one I have is a softmodem which doesn't work out of the box...
What I've understood so far, the one that we need would be non-soft modem that shows up as
/dev/ttyACM0 when connected via usb

I'm not entirely sure if those would work right out of the box with the Pi without some sort of additional configuration, but hopefully someone here can shed more light on that I'd still recommend trying to find the Dell modem that I posted just to save yourself a hassle. Might be worth the few extra bucks.

I can confirm that the first USB modem than I linked to does not work. I ordered the Dell one that was linked to and it does indeed work. I was able to connect with quake 3 arena.

I believe you still need a voltage sim. Is there one out there other than a 9v battery version...something similar to a P.o.E. injector? I have a Raspberry Pi2 still in the box from last year.

I did have to make a line voltage inducer. I made my inducer a little bit different than most. I made it out of a phone line coupler so that I could plug any phone cord into it and just in case a cord goes bad, or if I want to use longer cords at some point. I would like to try and use a better power supply though. a 9 volt battery seems like a good testing tool but there has got to be a better way.

I notice a lot of lag in quake 3 using this Dreampi. the ping is ok for DC talks server, but the game is unplayable for me at the moment due to way to much lag. has anyone else had issues like this?

Edit, I changed phone cords from a really cheap one to one that is fairly good and my connection speeds doubled.

I did some experimenting with the dell modem. I tried to power the phone line using the USB 5 volt power. I hooked directly to the phone line connection inside the dell modems case. I basically used the line voltage inducer but with the USB power supply and it did not work. Next I will try to use a 9 volt power brick. I just don't like using a battery to power this thing. Its too bad that the USB power supply wasn't strong enough the way I tried it. There is plenty of room inside the modem case if anyone else has any ideas. I guess you could try stepping up the voltage, I don't know enough to do this though and it would take some more research.
