Dreamcast Games you play Online: Just got a dreamcast, looking to get it online!

Getting started

Post by nmcny »

My first post didn't seem to show up.

I just got a Dreamcast with a Model "A" modem, from reading online the Dreamcast powers this modem and I shouldn't have to create a line voltage inducer.

Can someone confirm with this modem https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005E ... 28AMZ00PEQ if I need a line voltage inducer? Thanks!

You always need a line voltage inducer as the USB modem requires it even if the Dreamcast modem doesn't. Also, that modem won't work as it's only compatible with Windows. I recommend buying a Dell NW147 as it's guaranteed to work.

I use that exact modem from Amazon and it works fine. I tried buying a Dell NW147 off eBay, and got a WinModem (it didn't work).

That's weird since the description specifically states "Only compatible with Windows". Maybe the seller you bought it from wasn't selling the same modem that's being described.

Errrr... Apparently it's a bootleg Dell NW147 or something since practically everyone here uses that modem including myself.

Thanks for the info on the line voltage, looking at that product on Amazon people seem to say it works on Linux. I'm gonna order both and see which one or if both work. Look forward to getting online!

Other places in the description it mentions Linux compatibility. I rolled the dice because it's easier to return that to Amazon than it is to return an item via eBay.

At this point, they're probably ALL bootlegs. I'd be shocked if any of the Dell NW147 were actually genuine.
