Hi, I’m new to the Dreamcast. I was going to buy a Retro-bit VGA cable, but they appear all sold out. Is any cheap Dreamcast VGA cable good enough for games that support VGA or is there a specific cable I should buy or avoid?
What kind of TV are you hooking up to? If you are connecting to HDMI, you could buy one of these Dreamcast to HDMI converter below and skip VGA since it also outputs 480p. They are okay picture-wise but be careful because the casing gets hot. I brought one second hand and after testing it out for a hour, it was troubling warm. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006 ... ry_from%3A
The one I have is a Bitfunx labeled one but they are very simliar.
How cheap are you talking about? Do you plan on playing any non-VGA compatible games? The cheapest vga cable are similar to these in the below link and picture. I can't give any personal testimony since I never used any. I always use a vga box. However for the few non-VGA games, the cable will not display a picture. Dreamcast VGA boxes allow you to switch to 480i/15khz video signals (composite/RGB/S-Video) in addition to VGA 480p/31khz but will cost more. Also you might need a video scaler or convertor in addition to the vga cable if your TV does not have a VGA input.
I'm also considering taking a gamble with this 3-in-1 HDMI, VGA, and RGBS box from AliExpress. It plugs directly into the back and doesn't have a cable the lack of shielding may not be an issue at all.
I need to print a label and burn a copy and I forget which one I used in the past. What's the most recent up to date cdi that automatically connects...
