Quake 3 pc cross compat

I've been a bit of a board hoar lately but i was reading on here you can play quake 3 dc against pc players? How does this work? in the max pool guide it says

You can also face PC players online just like in Quake 3 and PSO.

In 4x4 Evo, Q3A, Max Pool and PSO, a PC player can join a DC player online without any modifications.

To give credit where credit is due, though, the server does all the heavy lifting in PSO's case so that you don't crash each other. The versions weren't designed with compatibility in mind.

In quake 3 the pc player will have to download the Dc Map pack in able to join. right?
I don't know how to set up the autodownload to work on quake3 when a pc player connects it should automatically download the files needed but it doesnt work. I don't know anything more about it.

Not true. The PC player must download and install version 1.16n. No other version will work. The dreamcast map pack must also be downloaded and added.

its fully set up and configured, just download and play. Joining the server as 5th player will cause DC clients disconnect. So be nice
