The late version WRT54G routers aren't quite as good as the earlier ones for DD-WRT (or the GL models, which were expressly made to allow enthusiasts to flash other firmwares on them, pretty much).
That said, I do have a WRT54G-v8 that I've successfully flashed with DD-WRT. You have to use the Micro build of it and there's a bit of a procedure to follow to make it work, but it does work fine.
Due to the potential issues you might face, don't try to flash the router if that's your primary router (i.e, don't do it if you're not going to have Internet if it breaks). There's always the possibility of things breaking badly and leaving you with a brick in the end, so keep that in mind.

Thanx, I will carefully consider this. There is a cheesy wireless router without any id on it (mega generic). It's very old but I never plugged it in to see it I could get into it. The router has a really cheesy single antenna. I will see if I can get this to work first.
